Earth Hour = Media Hour?

I was impressed by the level of enthusiasm displayed by families, friends or even strangers in their cause to support the ‘Earth Hour’. Who could dispute the fact that 1 hour of energy saving would be of benefit to the environment, but what is it really about?

By Definition:
Earth Hour is an annual international event created by the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature/World Wildlife Fund), held on the last Saturday of March, that asks households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change. It was pioneered by WWF Australia and the Sydney Morning Herald in 2007, and achieved worldwide participation in 2008.

Simply translating that into:
Another commercial frenzy for the giant companies to show their support towards another humanity cause, to gain the media advantage and public recognition.

I don’t believe in the initiative, because for me, individuals need to do more than just switch off their light for an hour. I mean, you have 24 hours/day, 7 days a week, 4 weeks a month, 12 months a year. Surely, there’s more than 1 hour in a year for us to conserve the environment.

But these giant companies are another case altogether. I mean, how else would they actually do some good to the humanity, if not for another media advantage? Malaysian TV are broadcasting their effort, the paper are writing about it, and people aka the most gained publicity are talking about it. So, why not?

Let’s just reap the advantage of this free promo. Let’s pretend as if we care!

If that’s the only way to gain participation for big companies so that they would actually support the cause, why not? Don’t we all use each other at some point in time?

Make sense?

pernah tak tgk iklan hotlink dulu where this guy has only one bulb at home..so bila nak pergi toilet, dia kena cabut the bulb from his tv room then pasang kat toilet...bila nak masuk bilik tido, dia cabut the bulb from d toilet n pasang balik kat bilik tido...

tu adalah cara paling efektif kot kalau nak menyokong kempen mengurangkan pemanasan global..tu baru betul2 jimat eletrik...

hehehee :)

that's a striking opinion coming from a person whose company is currently & actively sponsoring an F1 team & a principal sponsor at that too..hehe..jokes.

i will agree with this opinion by the mere fact that these days, these modern days, anything that tweaks and pinches the term 'social responsibility' will gleefully attracted and embraced by the corporate societies.

i will agree to the opinion that this is nothing more than free advert that the Western world trying to blanket the fact that they were the ones who instigated the madness, the climate crisis, the green envelope. i even suspect the fact that this earth hour was mooted during the world is fighting through another economic frantic setback, which again cause solely by the Western world.

but that's just me. blaming & pre-judging.

albeit the earth hour was for a noble cause (which i did religiously adhere to switch off lights for an hour), i suspect the hidden motives behind and between it.

but hey, at least i did switch off for one hour. maybe this will be a start for me to switch off lights for hours after this. afterall, i switch off all the lights in my home when i'm off to work, don't you?. so we're all actually contributing to something without even realizing & and they didn't even bother to let us realize that. just busy with their kampanye.

Itu penjimatan berjaya. Lebih berjaya kalau dia guna energy saving bulb. Soh la DDYPC lancarkan kempen!

COngrats. You DID switch off your light, but i do hope that you are saving more energy after this than falling for the propaganda of let's save 1 hour every year. What a load of bull. It needs more than that. It is just a beginning.

i think earth hour was effective in reminding peeps that we should not waste energy, and that for every non essential lighting on, we would actually contribute to global warming via co2 emissions which in turn would screw up our weather patterns, melth the ice caps and introduce thunderstorms and flashfloods in places where no one would expect it.

I also believe that the earth hour project made some realize that its not just switching off, its also about not taking the car when we can walk or commute via public transport, to use less plastics, and so on.

the obvious reason.. yes.

Underlying message - the only way that we can get those giant companies that before was untouched, to do something environmentally great for humanity! And of course, media helps!

Salute.
